As you reach the end of the teen years, you face many decisions and challenges—what to do, where to live, who to live with. Whatever you decide, there will be issues to address for the first time. So at this stage of life, it's important to understand where you can get the help you need with these tough concerns.
Being on your own involves taking care of many things that others have managed for you up to now. Here's a list of some parts of your life that you may be taking over now, along with some tips for who can help.
Managing your hemophilia with inhibitors
Managing your hemophilia and inhibitors includes many different aspects—from being sure to treat bleeds quickly to being sure you keep an adequate supply of factor. Your HTC is a wonderful resource to help with all of these issues. Whether it is selecting a therapy, improving your infusion skills, or learning to order medications, the HTC staff can help. Learn more about HTCs—and be sure to connect with a new one if you've moved.
Managing your health
Eating well and exercising regularly are important for anyone with hemophilia and inhibitors. Your HTC can help you figure out the type of exercise which will work best for you. And while it may be more of a challenge to eat nutritiously when you are on your own, it is one of the most important skills you can learn for staying healthy.
Managing your insurance
It is likely that there will be transitions in your insurance as you move into adulthood. SevenSECURE® can help you understand your needs and identify options so you keep the coverage you need.
Managing your support team
As you move into different life situations—whether it is college or a new job or a new living situation—you need to always make sure that the people around you understand your hemophilia and how they can help you. This includes your friends, neighbors, co-workers, and, if you're in school/college, the school medical team. Your HTC is a key member of your team, so if you move you'll want to find the HTC closest to your new location. You can expand your support team by linking in with groups of people like you—young adults with hemophilia. A number of the hemophilia associations, such as National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) and Hemophilia Federation of America (HFA), have both local and national groups specifically for young adults.
Managing your time
This means making sure that the time you spend taking care of your hemophilia is as much as you need, but no more than necessary. Things like infusion time, infusion volume, and speed of bleed resolution can all make a difference in how quickly you can get back to what's important—enjoying your life.
